After a break-in or an attempt

Burglary repair in Alcoi: secure tonight, stronger next week

A snapped cylinder, a splintered frame, a door that no longer shuts. The first job is to make the home lock again before you sleep. The second, when you have had time to think, is a lock that would have stopped them.

In the right order

From the police report to a stronger door

  1. Report and photograph

Ring 112 or the police, and photograph the door, the lock and the frame from both sides before anything is moved.

  2. Ring us

Say what is broken: the cylinder, the lock body, the frame, the glass. A photo on WhatsApp helps bring the right parts.

  3. Secured that visit

A new cylinder, the keep refitted, the bolt made to catch. The price is agreed before the work starts.

  4. Stronger, later

Once the door has been seen properly, you are offered a choice of better cylinders and plates to fit on a second visit, or straight away if you prefer.

The stronger lock

High-security cylinders, guard plates and extra locks

A front door cylinder can be attacked in four ways: snapped, bumped, drilled or pulled. A security upgrade answers each of them:

  • A high-security cylinder with anti-snap, anti-bump, anti-pick and anti-drill protection, sitting flush with the door.
  • A guard plate on the outside that covers the cylinder and leaves only the keyway exposed, so there is nothing to grip.
  • A reinforced keep on the frame, so the bolt is held by more than a few screws in old wood.
  • A second lock, or a multipoint lock where the door can take it, so one weak point is not enough.

Swapping a cylinder for an ordinary new one, with no break-in behind it, is covered on the lock change page.

Weak points in Alcoi homes

Balconies, old street doors and houses with a gate

Every 5 January, the pages of Alcoi’s Cabalgata, the oldest Three Kings parade in Spain, climb ladders to the balconies to hand over presents. It is a lovely tradition and a useful reminder that a first-floor balcony is reachable. An aluminium balcony door that only closes on its latch is worth checking: the guide written for Cabalgata night shows how.

In the Centre and the Barri de la Sang, an old wooden street door often has nothing but its original lever lock. It can keep their character and gain a modern cylinder, as explained on the old wooden doors page. In the urbanisations of l’Estepar, Baradello and Montesol, a detached house has more doors to think about: the front door, the garage, the gate.

If the safe was attacked, see safes opened and repaired. If you cannot get back in at all, it is an emergency call-out. Photos can go to us through WhatsApp or email.

Before you ring

Police, insurers and the lock that survived

Should I wait for the police before anything is repaired?

Report it first and take photographs of the door, the lock and the frame before anything is touched. Once the report is made and the photos are taken, the door can be made secure.

They tried but did not get in. Is the lock still all right?

Not necessarily. A cylinder that has been gripped, twisted or partly snapped can still turn and then fail days later. Have it checked, and if it shows marks, replace it.

Will the insurer pay for the new lock?

That depends on your policy. Keep the police report number, the photos and the invoice, which itemises what was replaced and why. The invoice is yours to send them.

Can the stronger cylinders open with the same key as my other doors?

Yes. Cylinders can be ordered to share one key across the front door, a back door and a terrace door, so you are not carrying a heavier bunch.

Door forced while you were out?

Report it, take your photos, then ring. The door will lock again before the visit ends.
