Home and business safes

Safe opening in Alcoi, including the safes that came with the house

A code nobody remembers, a battery that went flat inside, a safe in a house you have just inherited or bought. Most safes open without being wrecked, and the ones that cannot are given a new lock and go back to work.

  • Proof of ownership first
  • Override methods before drilling
  • New safes bolted down

The usual reasons

Why safes stay shut

  • The code is lost, or someone changed it and did not say.
  • Flat batteries: on many models the keypad still lights but the bolt will not move.
  • A jammed bolt: the code is accepted and the handle will not turn.
  • The owner has died and nobody had the code or the emergency key.
  • Someone tried to force it, and now even the right code fails.

Houses changing hands

Inherited and bought houses, and the safe nobody mentioned

Alcoi’s population is growing again: 61,613 people on 1 January 2025, the highest figure since 2008. At the same time parts of the town, such as El Partidor in Zona Alta, have an ageing population and older housing. Both mean houses changing hands, and safes turning up with them.

Out in El Comtat, country houses and village houses are bought by people looking for space and quiet at lower prices than on the coast, and old safes come with those too. If you are sorting out a family house, the guide to inheriting a house in Alcoi goes through the keys, the locked rooms and the safe, in the order that saves trouble.

Opening one

What happens when a locked safe is opened

Send a photo of the front of the safe, with the keypad or dial and any maker’s label. Have something ready that shows it is yours to open: the deeds, the rental contract, the inheritance papers, or the business’s documents. The price is agreed once the safe has been seen and before any work starts.

The manufacturer’s override, the emergency lock or the electronics are tried first. Drilling, when it is needed, is done at a single point and the lock is replaced, so the safe can be used again. A safe that was attacked in a burglary often goes with other repairs: see the break-in page. For shops and offices, the rest of the premises is covered under locks for businesses.

New safes

Fitting a safe where it will stay

A safe that is not anchored is only a heavy box. New safes are supplied and bolted into a solid wall or floor, out of sight of the front door. Fitting one is often done on the same visit as new cylinders for a newly bought home. Ask through the contact page with the size of what you want to keep in it.

Before you ring

Batteries, codes and inherited safes

The keypad beeps but the safe stays shut after the right code.

Try fresh batteries first: many keypads accept the code on low power but cannot pull the bolt back. If new batteries change nothing, the bolt may be jammed by something pressing on the door from inside.

Nobody in the family knows the code of our late father’s safe.

Have the inheritance papers or the deeds of the house ready, and a photo of the safe. Most safes can be opened through the manufacturer’s override or emergency lock; the rest are drilled at one precise point and given a new lock.

Will the safe be usable after it has been opened?

In most cases, yes. It is given a new code or a new lock. A safe that had to be drilled has the hole plugged and the lock replaced.

Can a new safe be fitted in an old house with thick stone walls?

Usually, yes. Old walls can be very solid, which is good for anchoring, but the fixing points are chosen once the wall has been seen. In a floor, the screed has to be deep enough.

Safe ignoring the code you remember?

Send a photo of the front of the safe on WhatsApp, with the keypad or dial in view.
